It's rare for any of us who've lived a considerable time into our adulthood to go through our years without at some point experiencing the heartache of a once dear and seemingly close and faithful relationship for some reason unexpectedly changing and turning into only a heavy painful memory. It could be anyone who was once close to us. A friend, a relative, a mate. In the Bible King David himself expressed the amazement and sorrow of more than one such betrayal by others dear to him in his life. As a former pastor and knowing the stories of so many others along my pathway I've seen this heartbreak take place far too many times to ever count. It's such a common part of the human story.
In my own later life I personally suddenly experienced the loss and deep pain of a once assumed committed and loving relationship. I wanted to express and share what that major change, loss and pain is like through my music. Several years went by and then one day a musical theme that conveyed the feeling came to me while I was playing my guitar. Soon the words for my song also followed. There Was A Time was given expression.
My hope and prayer is that this song will give some measure of comfort to many who will know that the grief of such a painful experience and the memory of the loss of a once loving relationship is very real and is shared by countless others. And for those who've never personally had such an experience and loss, or never will, it will help provide some insight, empathy and compassion for those in their life who do.
