The Story Behind “Watch Today”
“Watch Today” is Terry Parks’ song of expectation — a call to keep our eyes lifted and watch for the return of Christ. It opens in the shadows, with storm clouds gathering and “signs of sorrows” foretold long ago drawing near. But the darkness is never the song’s destination: from the first verse it presses on toward “that promised day,” when history will draw its darkness to a close and Christ descends to reign on earth as King.
At its heart is the simple command running through the chorus — “Don’t sleep or lose your way… Watch today.” It echoes Jesus’ own words to His followers to stay awake and watchful, joined to the call to keep “working for the Kingdom’s sake” while we wait.
And it ends in hope — a day when nature itself shouts for joy, when “trees and hills will sing,” when every sin and sorrow disappears and He wipes all tears away. For Terry, “Watch Today” is both a warning and an invitation: to live each day with one eye on the dawn we have been promised.
Lyrics
I can see storm clouds forming in the skies
Signs of sorrows fill my eyes from words said long ago
Looks to me, times foretold are on their way
Bringing in that promised day to end this night we know
History will draw its darkness to a close
In days of brightest hope for those
Who long for Christ's return
So join with me, looking for the dawn to break
Working for the Kingdom's sake
Don't sleep or lose your way
Watch today, hear Him say, "Watch today"
And I can see distant days of light and love
Christ descending from above, to reign on earth as King
Then there will be a time when nature shouts for joy
The Kingdom nothing can destroy
When trees and hills will sing
Can you see, this darkness that we've all lived in
Will disappear with every sin,
He'll wipe all tears away
Come join with me, looking for the dawn to break
And working for the Kingdom's sake
Don't sleep or lose your way
Watch today, hear Him say, "Watch today"
Can you see, this darkness that we've all lived in
Will disappear with every sin,
'Cause He'll wipe all tears away
So join with me, looking for the dawn to break
And working for the Kingdom's sake
Don't sleep or lose your way
Watch today, keep watch today
Hear Him say, "Watch today"
